We will be 100% PFC-free across our apparel platform in 2023. Here’s why that matters and what it means:
Perfluorinated compounds [PFCs or PFAS] are also known as forever chemicals and have been used in clothing (stain, wrinkle and water resistant finishes) as well as many other products like furniture (anti-stain fabric finishes) and kitchenware (some non-stick treatments) for more than 40 years. However, as more research has been conducted, we have learned that not only do these chemicals end up in our watershed — where they are being found in every single body of water tested — but that they will last for hundreds of years (hence the name forever chemicals) and may even be linked to a host of other harmful issues to humans and wildlife. Regulation such as California’s PFAS ban has begun to be implemented starting in 2025, but Janji has taken an ambitious leap to ensure that our apparel is 100% PFAS-free as of 2023.
What does this mean for you? Well, this means that we are using bio-based water repellent finishes across our Rainrunner, Stormrunner, Zephyrunner, Transit, and Atlas fabrics to help this gear repel rain and dry quickly without leaving any harmful chemistry in our watershed. Now in total transparency, these bio-based water repellent fabrics do not currently offer the same level of protection as chemical based perfluorinated compounds which are insanely good at creating a barrier (literally similar stuff that made Teflon) that coats gear and why those chemicals last for so long in the environment. The biggest difference that you may notice is when it comes to oil-based stain resistance — bio-based DWR does not offer the same resistance as PFCs.
We are continually striving toward making the best product possible for you, the runner, and the planet, and that can be a delicate balancing act. With Janji’s core mission dedicated to improving access to clean running water, we believe choosing PFC-free DWR as the best solution currently, but are researching ways to improve the stain-resistance for even better performance and durability of our gear while continuing to protect the places we run.
PFC-free DWR
We use recycled synthetic materials where possible to help us reduce our carbon footprint and water consumption as recycled fabrics use less energy and water to produce.
We are on track to transition 100% of our virgin polyester-based fabrics over to recycled by the end of 2024. We use the highest-performing recycled yarns we can find to create the longest-lasting product possible that can stand up to repeated use.
Nylon is more durable, shape-retentive and odor-resistant than polyester — the reason we have chosen to use it across our bestselling Rainrunner, Groundwork and merino-blend fabric programs. This also makes it more costly, especially for recycled nylon. As a small, independent brand, this cost difference can be prohibitive. While we introduced our first recycled nylon in 2022 (hello Atlas Pants!), our next step is working toward transitioning our remaining virgin nylon programs to recycled in 2024 with the ultimate goal of using 100% primary recycled yarns by the end of 2025.
We are also looking into the new, innovative field of “green synthetics” which use alternatives to petroleum, such as the food industry byproduct of castor oil. These fabrics are entirely plastic-free and biodegradable yet still largely untested for running performance, so we will be prototyping soon in our effort to pursue forward motion for the path ahead.
Recycled Synthetics
We have been working with a majority of certified fabrics for our apparel platform since 2020. These certifications are a base level foundation to ensure that we are choosing materials that are the safest option for people, animals, and the environment.
bluesign® certification ensures that our goods are made from materials that are produced using only chemicals and processes that are safe for customers, and that air and water emissions from the manufacturing processes are entirely clean, making for a safer working environment for those in the manufacturing process as well as those living in the nearby communities and worldwide. OEKO-TEX® certification ensures that our fabrics that include natural fibers such as cotton do not contain substances that can be harmful to the end-customer. The full list of restricted chemicals can be found here.
Responsible Wool Standard® certification ensures that our wool is sourced only from farms that follow industry best-practices in land management including those that preserve biodiversity and soil health, and in animal welfare, including prohibitions against mulesing and against non-medically necessary tail docking, horn trimming, of sheep on certified farms.
